The union of Honduran businessmen estimates the country's losses caused by contraband goods at $127 million, a phenomenon which occurs to a greater extent in products for human consumption, such as medicines and beverages.

The executive director of the National Association of Industrialists (Andi), Fernando García, explained to Latribuna.hn that   "... "In some of these sectors, between 30 and 40 is via contraband, that is to say, a large part of the products that the population is consuming is counterfeit, or they are clones, what we call illicit trade."

"... According to commercial intelligence data, the problem tends to mutate and what was previously indisputably imported, is now made in the country, since research indicates that merchants buy raw materials and manufacture medicines, lotions and food in clandestine factories. In order to confront the problem, the Andi and the Cohep propose reactivating the Inter-Institutional Anti-Trafficking Unit, which allows activities to be coordinated with government entities in charge of combating the illicit merchandise trade."
