Imports in Costa Rica: More Volume With Less Value

Imports of meat and vegetables had the highest growth in 2015, while the volume imported by all sectors grew by only 2%, and the total value dropped by 8%.

From a report issued by the Chamber of Importers of Costa Rica:

Imports were distributed in 2015 in 30 commercial and industrial sectors.  The industrial sector accounted for 92.9% of total imports, however, it experienced a 4% decrease compared to 2014. 
The agricultural sector makes up 5.4% of imports and decreased by 12% compared to  the previous year. 

INCREASE IN MEAT BOUGHT FROM ABROAD:  
The livestock sector accounted for 1.7% of total imports, and showed an increase of 30% compared to 2014. There was a noteworthy increase in purchases of frozen meat, both pork and beef as well as fresh or chilled meat, deboned beef, and sardines. These products are mainly purchased in the United States, Nicaragua and Panama,  together making up 62.6% of imports.

Costa Rica: Exports up 7%

December 2018

Based on sales of medical and precision equipment, between January and October of this year the country reported $8.908 million in exports, 7% more than in the same period in 2017.

According to the Foreign Trade Promoter of Costa Rica (Procomer), in the first ten months of the year, medical equipment and precision exports represented 29% of total sales and registered an 18% increase compared to what was reported in the same period in 2017.

Nicaragua: Exports Stagnate

During the first five months of the year exports totaled $1.219 billion, without registering significant variations compared to the same period last year.

At the end of the first five months of the year, the value of FOB exports totaled $1.219 million, an amount that only exceeded by $289 thousand the $1.2189 billion exported in the same period in 2017, informed the Central Bank of Nicaragua.

Nicaragua: Exports Up 26% in June 2017

In the first half of the year, foreign sales grew by 26% compared to the same period in 2016, driven by the manufacturing industry, whose exports grew by 30%.

From the Foreign Trade report January June 2017, by the Central Bank:

At the end of the first half of 2017 the value of FOB merchandise exports totaled US $1,477.3 million; which represented a year-on-year increase of 25.9 percent in relation to the amount accumulated in the same period in 2016 (US $1,173.6 million).

Nicaragua: Exports Up 33%

June 2017

Foreign sales in the first quarter of the year generated $740 million, which represents an increase of 33% compared to same period in 2016.

From a report by the Central Bank of Nicaragua:

At the end of the first quarter of 2017, the general merchandise trade deficit amounted to US $580.7 million, a significant reduction of 21.5 percent compared to the same period in 2016 (US $ -739.3 million).
