In Panama the amount of ongoing investment in hydropower projects adds up to $1 billion , 95% of which are in Chiriqui and Bocas del Toro.

In the provinces of Chiriqui, Bocas del Toro, Veraguas, Cocle Colon 18 hydroelectric plants are being built, said the National Authority of Public Services (ASEP).

Between 2013-14 8 new plants will join the system that together will generate 203 megawatts over the next two years. "In the second half of the year the power stations Mendres 2 and Perlas Sur should enter the system, while next year six other projects should become operational including Montelirio, which will produce 52 megawatts. The other projects will be ready after 2015 ", reported Prensa.com.

According to Fernando Vargas, head of the Environmental Management Unit of the ASEP, for the time being 19 concession projects are in their final stages and another 34 are in process.

One of those is Chan II in Bocas del Toro to be developed by the Empresa de Generación Eléctrica (Egesa), after the ASEP cancelled the concession of AES Panama. Vargas said Egesa could join with another company for the development of the work but must first get the final award.

New Deadline for Chan II Hydro Station Project

The Public Services Authority of Panama has established a deadline of January 15, 2020 to begin the construction of the Bocas del Toro hydroelectric dam.

Empresa de Generación Eléctrica (Egesa) is expected to accelerate the process to find a concessionaire to take over the construction of the hydroelectric project, which was previously in the hands of the Brazilian company Odebrecht.

Currently under public consultation is an environmental impact study for the amendments to Changuinola II hydroelectric project of 223 MW.

After renegotiating the state's participation in the hydroelectric project in January 2015, Empresa de Generación Eléctrica (Egesa) has completed the environmental impact study which includes changes to the original project, to be built in the province of Bocas del Toro.

Panama: Deadline Extended in Hydroelectric Chan II Tender

At the request of the three companies interested in the 213 MW work, the deadline for submitting bids has been extended until May 6.

May 6 is the date for receipt of the proposals from the three companies interested in the design, financing, construction and operation of the hydroelectric dam Changuinola II, in the province of Bocas del Toro.

Changuinola II Hydroelectric Station Still Under Discussion

AES Panama is trying to recover the concession for hydroelectric development in Bocas del Toro, and is offering more power plants.

In June 2011 the National Authority of Public Services (ASEP) canceled the concession for the construction of the second phase of the Changuinola hydro station planned in Law 6 of February 3, 1997.
