Household Income Up 10% in El Salvador

The average monthly income received by Salvadoran households increased from $506 in 2012 to $556 in 2013.

In urban areas, the median household income was $660.9, an increase of $66 compared to 2012. In rural areas, the average monthly income per household was $361.82, up by $23.4 in relation to 2012, according to the Multi-Purpose Household Survey presented by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MINEC).

Laprensagrafica.com reports that "... Based on the same survey, according to the MINEC, poverty in El Salvador has dropped by 5% in a year. In 2012 the proportion of poor households was 34.5%, whereas in 2013 it was 29.6%. The reduction in the proportion of poor households is higher in urban than in rural area. In rural areas this has gone down 7.3 percentage points, going from 43.3% in 2012 to 36% in 2013; in urban areas it has gone down 3.7 points: going from 29.9% in 2012 to 26.2% in 2013 "

Poverty in Costa Rica Does Not Fall Back

During 2019, the proportion of households living in poverty in the country remained at 21%, which is identical to the percentage reported in 2018.

According to the National Household Survey 2019, prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses, per area of residence, urban poverty reaches 19.8% of households, while rural poverty reaches 24.2%, both values without significant changes with respect to 2018.

Income from self-employment has improved in rural areas, while urban households purchasing power fell by 1.2% in June 2015.

Although the unemployment rate in Costa Rica was close to 10% in October 2015, the income from self-employment has consolidated becoming the second largest source in the country: it increased by 22.7% in June 2015 compared to same month in 2014 in rural areas and 16.1% in urban areas, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Census.
