Household Appliances: Demand Trends

Between July and October 2020, the number of people in Guatemala looking online for options to buy a coffee machine increased by 87%, while the number of Salvadoran consumers looking to buy a vacuum cleaner decreased by 60%.

CentralAmericaData's interactive platform, Consumer Insights, monitors in real time changes in consumer habits in all markets in the region and in other Latin American countries, with fundamental information to understand their behavior, new trends and anticipate eventual changes in their purchasing patterns.

For this analysis, CentralAmericaData collected data on the number of Central American consumers who in July showed their interest in purchasing some type of home appliance via online. In October the same information was collected again and the variations reported in the quarter in question were evaluated.

Details of some of the most outstanding findings:


Between July and October in Costa Rica the number of consumers looking to buy a washing machine or dryer decreased from 38 thousand to 13 thousand, which is equivalent to a variation of -66%. In Panama the drop in the number of people who tried to buy this type of appliance was 71% and in Honduras a rise of 90% was reported.

For the months in question, the number of Guatemalans who sought to purchase air conditioning equipment decreased by 3%, in El Salvador a variation of 42% was reported, and in Costa Rica the number of consumers interested in this equipment grew by 6%.

Regarding the refrigerator market, for the months under analysis in Guatemala there was a -23% variation in the number of people looking to buy this type of appliance, in El Salvador the percentage change was -14%, in Panama -90% and in Costa Rica -81%.
