Honduras to Import Milk Powder

For this year, the government authorized the importation of 3,300 tons of whole milk powder, 7,700 tons of skimmed milk powder and 2,750 tons of butterfat.

Tuesday, February 27, 2018

According to ministerial agreement 012-2018 published on February 17 in the official newspaper La Gaceta, the Honduran government has authorized the entry of a batch of whole and skimmed milk powder, arguing that it is " ... due to high rainfall and low temperature that prevailed in the months of November and December, which generated a decrease in the volumes and quality of the milk produced in the Atlantic area."

The agreement adds that "... In order to avoid a shortage of milk and its derivatives and speculation in the prices of the above-mentioned products, the dairy sector believes that it is necessary to open an import quota for whole milk powder, skimmed milk powder and butterfat for transformation and thus be able to supply national demand and export consumption."

The publication in La Gaceta notes that the imports authorized in the agreement are valid until December 31, 2018.

Milk Producers and Industrial Conflict

July 2012

The dairy industry in Panama wants to import 2,135 tons of milk powder, a measure opposed by ranchers.

According to an article in Prensa.com, "recent approval was given for the entry of 3,000 tons of milk corresponding to a second regular quota negotiated with the World Trade Organization, so it does not make sense for industrialists to say they will run out of primary material", said Jose Pablo Solis, president of the National Cattlemen's Association, Chapter of Los Santos.
