Honduras Lifts Restriction on Guatemalan Pork

Since January 19, the measure imposed last August by the Honduran government last August, which prevented the entry of pork products and by-products from Guatemala, has been lifted.

After consultation meetings on this matter, Honduras lifted the measure, reestablishing, as of January 19 of this year, the entry of processed meats and sausages into the Honduran market corresponding to tariff items 1601.00.30.00, 1601.00.90.00, 1602.41. 00.00 and 1602.49.90.00.

From a statement issued by the Ministry of Economy in Guatemala:

The Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Guatemala, informs the population, that derived from the health measure of precautionary quarantine on porcine products and by-products originating in and coming from Guatemala that was imposed by the Republic of Honduras on August 25, 2017, this Ministry in the exercise of its powers and within the framework of the Mechanism for Settlement of Commercial Disputes between Central America, carried out the corresponding consultation stage, thus forming the MSC file 01-2017, in order to resolve this situation.

As a result, on January 19, 2018, after consultation meetings on this matter, Honduras was able to lift this measure, reestablishing the entry of Guatemalan processed meats and sausages into the Honduran market without any non-tariff restrictions, which corresponds to tariff items 1601.00.30.00, 1601.00.90.00, 1602.41.00.00 and 1602.49.90.00 as of January 19 of this year, which is indicated in the Official Letter that the National Service of Food Safety and Agrifood of the Republic of Honduras, SENASA, delivered to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food, MAGA, of the Republic of Guatemala on the same date.

The government ordered the start of an administrative investigation to determine whether safeguard measures on pork imports are warranted.

According to Resolution No. 003 of May 3, 2019, published in La Gaceta Oficial, "it is ordered to initiate an investigation for the possible imposition of safeguard measures to the product Meat of pigs, fresh, chilled or frozen; in carcasses or half carcasses, bone-in or boneless, fit for human consumption, requested by the National Association of Pig Producers of Panama (ANAPOR)."

El Salvador Bans Entry of Guatemalan Pork

The Salvadoran Ministry of Livestock has closed the borders to Guatemalan pork due to an outbreak of classical swine fever in that country.

The ban also applies to pork products and pork byproducts, said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in El Salvador.
