Honduras: Shrimp Exports Up 9%

In 2014 revenues from sales abroad of shrimp were $252 million, up 9.1% compared to the previous year.

In 2014 30.7 million kilos of shrimp was produced, up 0.3% from the 30.6 million kilos recorded in 2013. The increase in exports is mainly due to an 8% increase in the international price, according to the Central Bank of Honduras.

Eleconomista.net reports that "... Shrimp sales were higher by $21.1 million (9.1%), compared to the $230.9 million exported in 2013. The United States, Mexico and the UK are the main markets to which Honduras exported shrimp in 2014. "

"... Shrimp, next to coffee and bananas, is one of the main exports of Honduras, according to local authorities. "

Between January and August lobster production grew by 30% compared to the same period in 2014, while production and export of farmed shrimp fell by 32% and 40%, respectively.

Shrimp Shortage in Mexico

Sales of fish and seafood in the Mexican market reached 635 thousand tons in 2013, this level of sales represents an increase of 2% compared to 2012.

Shrimp Farming Growing

In Panama, Cocle shrimp sales rose in the first quarter, up 14% compared to the same period in 2011, reaching a value of $3 million.

Companies and authorities expect an increase of 30% of shrimp exports only in the province of Cocle.

"Already during the first quarter of this year, exports of this marine product from the Cocle province have increased and up to April nearly half a million pounds were exported, generating sales of around $3,148,000," reported Prensa.com.
