Honduras Seeking Another Mobile Communications Operator

An international process will start in the coming months to pre-qualify companies for the selection of a fourth mobile operator.

In August a tender was launched to hire a company to handle the design specifications of the tender to enable the 900 MHz and 2500 MHz band, which the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) will be holding in the coming months.

Ebal Diaz, head of Conatel, told Elheraldo.hn that   "... There is a lot of attention on what Conatel has been working on for months, for which reason we believe that there will be parties interested in this tender."Actually we have two operators and the [one]  from the government which has to grow, a third commericial trader with equal or larger size than the others," said the official. Conatel reported that there are 7,734,848 million cell phone users."

Preparations are being made for a new tender to assign radio spectrum to a private third party mobile operator.

The National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) plans to allocate part of the spectrum in the bands 700, 900 and 2500 Mhz. 

Honduras Tenders Database for Number Portability

Conatel has put out to public consultation a project for a network identification codes for number portability, which will include all the numbers assigned by telephone companies in the country.

The project specifications state that the code will allow identification of service providers networks for purposes of cell phone portability, allowing users to retain their number even if they change company.

Little Fixed Telephone Use in Honduras

Over 80% of telephone calls are made via cell phones, and the vast majority are by private operators.

According to the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel), the number of households with mobile phones increased from 657,000 in 2006 to 1.4 million in 2011.

Cell phone use has become the communication system with the highest penetration in the country, for every 100 minutes of local or national calls, 81% are made via a mobile phone.

Honduras: Additional Digit for Fixed Line Telephones

August 2010

From November a new digit will be added to all fixed line telephone numbers.

The digit "2" will be added to the beginning of current numbers, stated the Honduran National Telecommunications Commission (CONATEL in Spanish).

According to Proceso Digital, CONATEL authorities say this project will enable the regulator to better manage the technical aspects of fixed telephony operators, whether state or private owned.
