Panamanian government spends $1.3 Million to rent security vehicles

April 2008

The information appears in the government web page "Panama Compra." The National Economic Council of the Ministry of Economy and Finances approved last 25 March 2008 through a unanimous vote the direct contract to the company Arrendadora Global S.A. (Budget Car and Truck Rental), for the rental of the cars, thereby bypassing the public bidding process.

The cars will be used by Torrijos' bodyguards from 1 January through 30 June 2008. The contract already was signed between Rubén Arosemena, second vice-president and minister of the Presidency, and Julia Elida Guardia de Araúz, the President of Arrendadora Global, S.A.. This is not the first time the Ministry of the Presidency has paid for cars for Torrijos' security detail. Last December they signed a contract to rent 60 cars (among them 4x4's, mini vans, pick up trucks, a microbus, and a sedan) with the company Rent a Car Panameña, S.A., for the sum of $991,987.50.
