Honduras Opposes Rice Importation

The government denies that there is a shortage of the grain and therefore has refused the import of 20,000 tons proposed by the rice industry.

Wednesday, October 9, 2013

There are certain mills which need rice, others do not, but regardless, the application should have been made in August and the government has already given its resolution in which they say there is no shortage," said Kamal Dieck, general manager of Beneficio Dieck.

The Honduran government "believes that the mills have enough inventory to supply the market from now up to the end of the year," he added.

Meanwhile, Ramon Escobar, Vice Minister of Agriculture, said that "among the most important variables which are analyzed to determine whether or not there is a need to import white rice are the inventory of gold rice, as well as production (1.2 million quintals) and demand (3 million quintals) ", reported Laprensa.hn.
