Honduras: Onion Imports Regulated

The Ministry of Development has announced a new licensing regime to import onions, which will be available only for the usual operators in the production and marketing chain.

The government of Honduras together with onion producers and importers has agreed to create a regulation on importing vegetables in order to control the activity.

Alden Rivera, head of the Ministry of Economic Development, told Latribuna.hn that "... Previously, anyone could import this product at the expense of domestic production, but now imports are regulated and only members of the chain may import. "

Official sources say that the country produces 440,000 hundredweight of onions every year, a production level that in Nicaragua covers 90% of domestic demand, therefore there is a need to cover the remaining 10%.
