Honduras: National Quality System

The National Quality System Law that was recently approved by Congress strengthens companies in the area of certification.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

What stands out the most in the new law, which was drafted with the support of specialists from the Institute of Metrology of Germany, is the creation of the Quality Institute, forcing the state to allocate funds for the development of metrology, accreditation and standardization mechanisms.

According to Laprensahn.com: "Virgilio Umanzor, president of the National Competitiveness Commission, stressed that adoption of this law will strengthen SMEs to respond with quality products in the local market in the face of the entry of new competitors, ensuring consumer protection. Article 1 of the Law states that “the necessary infrastructure for quality development and demonstration in order to promote the competitiveness of domestic firms is established, providing confidence in the transaction of goods and services."

Currently, only 84 companies are ISO 9001 certified in Honduras.
