Honduras: More Biomass Power

Honduras has presented in the EIS for the expansion of a power plant based on bagasse with a required investment of $13.7 million.

The environmental impact study has been presented for the expansion of a power plant based on biomass, bagasse, cane stubble and sawdust in the town of San Juan de Flores, Francisco Morazán.

The document was presented the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Honduras by Compañía Azucarera Tres Valles on December 31. The document reports that the project will cost an estimated $13.7 million.

An environmental impact study has been presented for the increase up to 35 MW the capacity of the 'Central Azucarero Jiboa' plant in the department of San Vicente.

In the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in February 2016 by Ingenio Central Azucarero Jiboa S.A., it indicates that the development will be named "Expansion in electricity generation to 34.9 MW" and will be located at the same site as the mill Kilometer 68 ½ on the road from San Vicente to Zacatecoluca in Canton San Antonio Caminos, in the municipality of San Vicente.

Sugar Sector Has Opportunities in Energy Generation

With the new law on biofuels in Honduras plans are to invest in technology in order to make better use of bagasse and triple the annual capacity for power generation.

The sugar sector currently generates 140 MW of energy a year, of which it sells 100 MW to the national electric power company at seven cents per kilowatt, and the rest is used for internal consumption by the enterprises themselves.

Using Renewable Energy will not Lower Prices

This was admitted by the director of development of renewable energy at the National Energy Council (CNE), Mario Rodriguez, who presented to representatives of the electricity sector the content of a Master Plan for Development of Renewable Energy.

Sugar Mill Allowed to Generate 35 MW of Biomass

The Nicaraguan regulator has given the Compañía Azucarera del Sur (Casur) a license to generate electricity from biomass.

The plant which will generate 35 MW will be built at the industrial sugarcane complex, Benjamin Zeledon, in the town of Potosi, department of Rivas.

The license granted by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, is to build and operate the project for a period of thirty years.
