Honduras: Concession of Airfield in Copan Approved

With an investment of $270 million plans are underway to build a runway at Aeródromo Río Amarillo, and reconstruction of the Chamelecón road up to the border of Ocotepeque.

"... A decree has been passed authorizing the execution of a trust agreement for the project entitled "Financing, Construction, Operation and Maintenance of Aeródromo Río Amarillo in the municipality of Santa Rita in Copan", reported Laprensa.hn.

The contract "will be concluded between the Commission for the Promotion of Public-Private Partnerships (Coalianza), the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing (Soptravi) and Continental Bank.

Honduras Inaugurates Tela Airfield

It is the third terminal opened by the government, which aims to create a network of 8 airfields to encourage the development of tourism in different parts of the country.

Tela airfield in the coastal department of Atlantis, has one runway measuring 1,600 meters and is now able to receive flights by smaller aircraft. The tourism private sector expects that increased air connectivity will boost development in the area.

The inauguration scheduled for March 10th has revitalized investments in the tourism sector, while three airlines are interested in operating three weekly flights.

The Río Amarillo airfield is currently 90% complete, test flights have been made and its official opening is scheduled for March 10.

The government has announced that it has the land where construction will begin for the airfield valued at $730 thousand, 17 kilometers from the Copan Mayan ruins.

The government said it plans to start the construction work with measuring and transfer of equipment early next month.
