Hondurans to Export Cocoa to Switzerland

Through a marketing agreement among producers in Honduras, cocoa will be exported jointly to the Swiss Company, Chocolats Halba.

The Association of Honduran Cocoa Producers (APROCACAHO) will centralize organic cocoa exports from the agricultural cooperative Omoa San Fernando Limited and the Association of Choloma River Producers (APACH) with the signing of the marketing agreement.

The president of APROCACAHO, Aníbal Ayala, commented to Laprensahn.com: "APROCACAHO will be the organic cocoa exporter. The advantage of this contract is that Halba Chocolates gave us the green light to make the transition from conventional chocolate-which is what Honduras produces, to organic chocolate, which is the variety that we want to achieve in the next 36 months. Therefore, this agreement will be in place during the transition period that began on February 11."

Honduran Cacao Goes to Switzerland

In 2011 the country exported a total of 40 tons of cocoa to Halba, a Swiss chocolate maker.

Exports generated $1.5 million in foreign exchange, said Anibal Ayala, president of the Honduran Association of Caco Producers (APROCACAHO).

"Ayala told reporters that Hondurans who grow the grain will gain a profit of $1.16 per kilo, as it is sold at $2.94 and its production cost is $1.78.

First Shipment of Honduran Cacao to Switzerland

The first cocoa shipment would be sent by the end of October for Swiss company Chocolats Halba.

The contract with the European company was signed in May, and the first shipments will correspond to the 2009/10 harvest, said Aníbal Ayala, president of the Honduran Cacao Growers Association.
