Honduran Coffee Exports Up 35%

To date exports have totaled 6.6 million bags (weighing 46 kilos), 35% more than in the same period of the previous harvest when exports amounted to 4.9 million bags.

The figures are even more encouraging considering that the total exports so far have exceeded the goal for this year of 5.4 million bags, according to information as at August 7, 2012, from the Honduran Coffee Institute (Ihcafe) .

"At an average price of 203.96 dollars per quintal, the 6.6 million bags of aromatic represent for the country an income of almost 1.361 million dollars, as estimated by the Ihcafé", reported Laprensa.hn

Although the harvest ends at the end of September, major changes in the data are not expected.

Coffee growers are counting on the production of more than 100 million quintals of top quality grain this harvest.

At the end of the 2010-2011 harvest, the country exported 5.2 million bags of 48 kilos, 13% more than in the previous 2009-2010 harvest.

As to the value of exports of the crop, they totaled $1,200 million versus $610 million from the previous harvest.

According to the Honduran Coffee Institute (Ihcafe) "the cultivation of the aromatic involved about 100,000 producers.

$1,000 million in Guatemalan Coffee

Coffee sales abroad in the years 2011-2012 are estimated to increase by 17%.

A 17% increase in export of the harvest which begins in August and ends in October 2012, is expected by the National Coffee Association (Anacafe).

If these estimates are met it would mean that for the first time Guatemala will export the equivalent of $1,000 million worth in bags of coffee, a figure which could be achieved partly thanks to high grain prices that currently prevail internationally.
