Homicide Figures in Central America

A report by InSight Crime highlights the homicide rate registered in Costa Rica in 2017, which was 12.1 per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest number in its history.

Thursday, January 25, 2018

The report indicates that Costa Rica is a country that has traditionally been considered "peaceful," and in respect to the escalation of the homicide rate, an increase that local authorities attribute to organized crime, the report indicates that " ... lack of retrospective and a vague methodology is weakening the authorities' attempts to attribute blame to organized crime. "

In relation to other Central American countries it was indicated that in El Salvador "... a total of 3,947 homicides occurred in 2017, resulting in a rate of 60 violent deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants. "In the case of Honduras "... the annual balance of violent deaths fell by 26 percent, going from 5,150 in 2016 to 3,791 in 2017, equivalent to a homicide rate of 42.8 per 100 thousand inhabitants. "

"Guatemala had a total of 4,409 homicides in 2017, according to an annual police report, which resulted in a homicide rate of 26.1 per 100 thousand inhabitants. This represents a slight decrease compared to the index of 27.3 in 2016, a much lower figure than that of its other two neighbors in the Northern Triangle: Honduras and El Salvador.

Panama's levels of violence have gone up because the " ... homicide rate of approximately 10.2 per 100 thousand inhabitants at the end of 2017, is slightly higher than the rate of the previous year, of 9.3." Nicaragua was the country that registered the lowest rate in Central America, since "... it had only 431 homicides in 2017, which gives an estimated rate of 7 per 100 thousand."
