Hiring Outlook Improves at the End of 2020

In the context of the economic crisis in Costa Rica, by the fourth quarter of 2020, 6% of employers plan to increase their payrolls, a share that doubles the 3% registered for the third quarter of the year.

Although Costa Rican employers report weak hiring intentions for the October-December period, these have improved slightly when compared to the July-September outlook.

According to Manpower's latest report, hiring plans are strengthened in five of six regions compared to the previous quarter, with Puntarenas & Limón standing out by 18 percentage points. Employers in Cartago report a significant increase of 14 percentage points and Trends improve by 9% and 3% in Guanacaste and San Jose, respectively.

The report states that "... Hiring plans are strengthened in four of the six sectors when compared to the previous quarter. The Trade and Agriculture, Fishing, Mining & Extraction sectors report considerable increases of 17 and 13 percentage points, respectively. Hiring confidence is 6 percentage points higher in Communications and Transportation. While Trends are weakening in two sectors, Manufacturing stands out by 4 percentage points."

The document adds that "... hiring plans are 19 percentage points stronger for Micro businesses when compared to the previous quarter, and improve by 2 percentage points in Small and Medium businesses, while Large businesses report no change."
