Health Tourism: Forecasts for Revival

Businessmen in Guatemala estimate that patients who visit the country with the aim of buying medical treatment will take between 9 months and a year to regain confidence in making the trip.

The sector is practically paralyzed, since due to the covid-19 outbreak worldwide, several countries have decided to close their borders and air terminals, and airlines are keeping their units on the ground.

Adrian Alvarado, president of the Commission of Tourism of Health and Well-being of Agexport, said to Prensalibre.com that "... I would say that right now the business is at zero, it is completely stagnant. First because patients cannot travel from one country to another and then because it is not advisable at this time to be looking at issues such as aesthetics or implants, which is why they were looking for us more in Guatemala."

Alvarado added that "... We have considered that it could possibly take between 9 months and a year for people to regain the confidence to travel abroad to have procedures of some kind performed on their health."

Of the total number of foreign clients who choose Guatemala as a destination for medical procedures, 70% seek dental services, followed by cosmetic surgery or rejuvenation processes.
