Guatemala's Atitlán backed as wonder of natural world

Guatemala's tourism institute, Inguat, is joining forces with the private sector to promote Lake Atitlán as one of the seven wonders of the natural world.

Director Julio Orozco said Inguat was contributing $67,000 to promote voting in favor of Atitlán. The lake, regarded as one of the world's most beautiful, currently ranks number 17 of 77 candidates.

Guatemala Will Regulate Navigation in Lake Atitlán

The Environment Ministry is preparing new regulation to control navigation at Lake Atitlán.

Among other things, it will require vessels to apply for a ‘green passport’ to operate in the lake, for which they will need to have bins in place to prevent users from dumping garbage into the lake.

Guatemala Launches Reforestation Campaign at Lake Atitlán

19 municipalities and communities will launch on June 1st a campaign to reforest the area surrounding Lake Atitlán.

$2.2 million will be invested to plant approximately one million trees, explained Iván Azurdia, from Segeplan, a government planning institution.

He told that “they are also working with the Road Conservation Fund (Covial) to create a plan to rescue the mountain slopes.

New Water Treatment Plant For Atlitan Lake in Guatemala

The Government of Guatemala inaugurated a sewage treatment plant in the province of Sololá.

The project was carried out by FONAPAZ, and is part of a wider program to clean up Lake Atitlán.

It uses volcanic rock and other minerals to clean the water before pouring it back into the lake.

5 companies have submitted bids to build a water treatment plant.

The winning company will be announced by the end of February, will be responsible of building the $2 million facility before the end of 2010.

The interested companies are Constructora Lyon, Constructora Francisco Herrarte Hernández, Mercadeo del Agua, Constructora de Obras Viales, Instalaciones y Estructuras and Durman Esquivel Guatemala.
