Guatemalans Switch from Cars to Motorcycles

Automotive dealership Cofiño Stahl ventured into the motorcycle market after the collapse in car sales.

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Car sales have decreased by more than 60% in the last year, forcing the sector to react and adapt. In the face of this situation, Cofiño Stahl, Chevrolet dealer, decided to enter the growing motorcycle market by importing and distributing the Chinese brand Genesis.

According to an article in elperiodico.com.ht, the company will seek to promote the product as an alternative to public transport since, according to their studies, "the average cost of a person who uses public transportation to travel to and from work is 12 Quetzals per day ($1.49,) a figure equivalent to the payment for financing a motorcycle."

According to Javier Casas, general manager of Cofiño Stahl, the motorcycle market is growing, with 85 thousand units sold in 2008.
