Chilean wines are the most sought after (60% market preference), followed by Argentinean and Californian ones.

"Supermarkets control 45% of wine sales, restaurants 30%, liquor distributors 15%, while the remaining 10% is controlled by wine stores 'La Vinoteca'", reported newspaper El Periódico de Guatemala.

'Grupo Umbral' owner of 'La Vinoteca' stores, will open an additional location in the country in October, and plans to expand to El Salvador and Honduras in 2010 and to Costa Rica in 2011.

Wine Consumption in El Salvador

Without accurate figures, annual imports of wines and therefore consumption in the country is currently estimated at about $10 million.

During the wine festival " Vinocultura Selectos 2012", Claudia Hernandez,brand manager at Distribuidora Negocios Internacionales, Sociedad Anónima (Disnisa), said that in its beginnings, twenty years ago, the company imported only one brand, but now distributes 17 different brands, importing about $3 million worth a year.

In the past ten years the demand increased from 117,500 9-liter cases in 2000 to 197,750 in 2010.

Data from Wine and Spirit Report (IWSR), an International market research firm, reports that 74% of wine consumption will be red wine, followed by a 24% of white wine and 2% of pink wine.
