Guatemalan Consumers Concerned About Insecurity

48% of the population lives with high fear of crime, and 93% believe the situation has worsened.

The Chamber of Industry of Guatemala submitted the Consumer Confidence Index for October, based on interviews with 1,000 consumers.

The problem of insecurity dominates statistics:
-1 In 4 states that he or his family have been victims of criminal acts.
-9 out of 10 believe that crime has increased and that it is very violent.
-7 out of 10 believe that crime will increase in the future.

The problem of insecurity affects the overall index, which is located at 78 and describes a population pessimistic about the economic future, employment, savings and investment.

Jaques de Raucurt, manager of The Marketing Group, which prepared the study, added that "people are afraid of losing their jobs next year and therefore do not borrow, do not consume and do not generate demand."

Costa Rica: Consumption Slows

Distrust by households about the economic future is slowing the growth of consumption.

The projections on consumption behavior made by the private sector for this year differ from government authorities.

A joint study by Unimer and El Financiero indicate that Costa Rican household consumption will grow 3.3% by the end of 2011, less than the 4.3% forecast by the Central Bank of Costa Rica.

Consumer Confidence Up in Panama

In September, Consumer Confidence Index was 112 points, eight points higher than results in the previous month (104).

The measurements were made by consultants The Marketing Group for the Chamber of Commerce of Panama, it shows that consumers are confident that home situation in the future will improve, since the indicator remains 20 points above critical point.

As of June, the consumer confidence index was 114.9 points, 8.3 points higher than that of the previous month (106.7).

The General Manager of The Marketing Group, the company in charge of conducting the survey along with the Chamber of Commerce, expressed that “future consumer confidence related to home and country situation, appears to be positive, due to the hopes that Panamanians have for the next government.”

The consumer confidence index prepared by the German pollster GfK and Guatemala's Chamber of Industry shows a 17-point decline in consumer confidence betweenFebruary and May.

It's now 70 points below the critical level of 100, which reflects pessimism. It is lowest among women, persons older than 36 years, some segments of minors and some who live in the country's interior.
