Guatemala and Belize Expand Trade Agreement

An agreement has been made to expand the list of traded products and other conditions of the Partial Agreement which has been in force since 2010.

Guatemala and Belize agreed to extend the benefits of the Partial Agreement which came into effect four years ago. The aim, according to the Ministry of Economy (Mineco), is to strengthen trade relations.

"We agreed to the adoption of the Regulations of the Administrative Commission, the creation of technical groups and Administration Market Access and expanded the list of traded products," said Maria Luis Flores, chief of Economics.

"The agreement is important because it aims to promote the maximum utilization of production factors and stimulate economic complementarity of both countries, and to ensure a level playing field that encourages a balanced and harmonious development of the countries."

According to the Mineco, trade between Guatemala and Belize has increased in the past two years. In 2012, Guatemalan exports reached $53.9 million, and last year exceeded $65 million. "

Plan to Expand Belize - Guatemala Trade Agreement

An agreement between the chambers of commerce of both countries would extend the list of goods covered by the partial agreement, which has been in force since 2010.

Chancellor Haroldo Rodas explained that tariffs will be gradually removed from a number of products deemed of interest for both sides.

Newspaper Siglo XXI reported that the Trade Ministry will make the full list of products available next Monday.

Belice and Guatemala Strike Agreement

October 2009

A Partial Trade Agreement, comprising 75 products, comes into effect this week.

This agreement is meant to be the prelude for a Free Trade Agreement between both countries.

"It was signed in 2006, and will ease tariffs on products such as oils, iron, wood, livestock, tropical fruits and fisheries", stated César Leon, from the Foreign Relations Ministry of Guatemala, in a Prensalibre.com article.
