Guatemala Extends Deadline For Duty Free Flour Imports

The Ministry of Finance has extended the deadline for the imports of duty free wheat flour until Dec 31.

The closing date had previously been set for the end of July.

"Luis Velasquez, Finance Minister, said the quota is for 25,000 metric tons (MT) of wheat flour. He added that so far 9,923 MT have been delivered and 15,76 MT are available to the public.

"It is expected that the global trend in price of raw materials will keep rising, so this contingent is aimed at ensuring market supply and price stability", said the minister to Prensalibre.com

In order to mitigate the impact of rising raw material prices on bakeries, the government of El Salvador is investigating eliminating the import tax.

The head of the ministry of economy, Armando Flores said, "We are exploring the possibility of temporarily eliminating tariffs, o as to help mitigate the price increase that has been felt."

Guatemala Sets Import Quota for Corn and Flour

The Ministry of Economy set a maximum duty-free import quota per company.

The ceiling for white corn is up to 3.000 metric tons per person or company and for wheat flour the maximum is one thousand metric tons.

Prensalibre.com noted in their article, "the economy ministry made the official announcement yesterday in Diario de Centro America of the import of 82 metric tons of white corn and 25.000 tons of wheat flour."

Guatemala Authorizes Import of Duty-free Corn and Flour

The Government allowed imports of 25 thousand tons of wheat flour and 82 thousand of corn.

The corn quota is to enter the country over the next three months and the wheat flour in the next six months.

Prensalibre.com reported that this entered in effect as two government decrees were published in the official newspaper on February 9, 2011.

Guatemala to Eliminate Tariff on Wheat Flour

January 2011

The Ministry of Economy proposed the elimination of the 5% tariff on imports of wheat flour.

The finance minister, Erick Coyoy, said the measure seeks to alleviate the increased price in commodities on the international market.

"The proposal must be submitted and endorsed by the Council of Ministers of Economy of Central America (Comieco)," stated the article Elperiodico.com.gt.
