Guatemala: Textile Exports Down 27.4%

Up to July, $547 million worth of textiles were exported, $207 million less than the same period of 2008.

Alejandro Ceballos, president of Vestex, the Textile and Apparel Commission, remarked the loss of 60.000 jobs in the sector from 2005 onwards.

Ceballos argued this during the presentation of "the VIII Business Survey, which was conducted among 135 maquila companies ... this study showed that from January to May, 66% of the companies reduced production, and 14% increased it, when compared to the same period of 2008", reported web site

Growth in Nicaraguan Textile Exports Slows

Despite the slowdown, the country's growth in textile sales abroad is still the second fastest in the Central American region.

According to information from the Nicaraguan Association of Textile Manufacturers (ANITEC in Spanish), in the first six months of 2010 exports generated foreign exchange income worth $461 million, while in the same period of 2009 the figure was $408.

Guatemalan Textile Exports Down 15.5% in 2009

The country exported $1.28 billion worth of apparel in 2009, 15.5% less than in 2008.

Data from Vestex, the Apparel and Textile Commission, shows that Guatemala sold $1.52 billion in 2008, and that exports have fallen 37.9% in the past 5 years.

Guatemala: 12.7% Increase in Textile Exports

During the month of April 2009, there were $87.4 million exported to the US, Guatemala’s main trading partner, 12.7% higher than what was exported in March.

Alejandro Ceballos, president of the Committee of Textiles and Clothing (VESTEX), believes that the sector will show greater recovery in July, when the strong season will begin in the US for the sector.

Guatemalan Textile Exports Drop by 29%

Sector entrepreneurs are focused on increasing the added value of the garments to offset the fall in demand abroad.

According to the Commission on Textiles and Clothing (Vestex) of the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agex-port), there were $202 million exported in January and February 2009, $84.2 million less than during the same period last year when the total was $286.2 million.
