Guatemala: Cell Phone Use Grows by 6.7%

During 2012, mobile telephony saw a total of almost 21 million users, an increase of 6.7% compared to 2011.

Thursday, May 2, 2013

According to statistics from the Superintendency of Telecommunications (SIT) in the past 9 years, mobile telephony has grown by 556%.

In 2003, Guatemala had more than three million subscribers, however, the figures indicate that as of 2009 the market stagnated and growth per year reduced to a million customers.

Ricardo Flores, telecommunications consultant of the firm Global Group said that this behavior was due to the fact that the market in the country is in a phase of maturation."The competition will be among the operators to migrate to other technologies that could increase demand for new lines," he explained.

"The expert said the trend in the country is for telecommunications services to be applied in a single package. This means that in the same channel (telephone) services include telephone calls, cable and internet, and other automated services such as mobile banking, which requires a smartphone", reported

SIT figures indicate that Tigo has a market share of 48%, followed by the company Claro, with a 31% and Telefónica in third place with a 20.7% share of the market.
