Guatemala Sells More Sugar to Canada

Between 2012 and 2016, exports to Canada almost doubled, raising from $55 million to $101 million, making it the main destination for Guatemalan sugar.

Change in exports 
Between 2015 and 2016 the value of raw sugar exported from Guatemala fell by 4%, going from $849 million in 2015 to $814 million in 2016. For its part, the volume sold went down by 3%, going from 2.1 million tons in 2015 to 2 million tons in 2016.  

The value exported to Canada grew by 222%, rising from $31 million in 2015 to $101 million in 2016.

Destination of exports 
In 2016, 14% of the value exported from Guatemala went to Canada, 12% to the US, 8% to Chile, 7% to Taiwan and 7% to Cote d'Ivoire.

Canada is the export destination that has grown most in the last 5 years, as in 2012 it represented 8% of the total value of raw sugar sales and last year this figure reached 14%.

Export price 
Between January 2012 and December 2016 the average price per kilo slid downwards, registering $0.58 per kilo in January 2012 and $0.44 per kilo in December 2016.

Sugar: Central America Exported $1.24 billion in 2017

Over the past year sales made by countries in the region totaled $1.24 million, 22% more than the exports registered in 2016, this increase is in contrast to the declines reported in 2015 and 2016.

Sugar Business Growing in Central America

In the first nine months of 2017, countries in the region exported $1.166 billion worth of sugar, 41% more than was sold during the same period in 2016.

Sugar in Central America: Export Volume Down 21%

April 2017

In 2016 the value of raw sugar exported from Central America amounted to $1,019 million, equivalent to 2.6 million tons, 21% less than than what was sold in 2015.
