Guatemala: Road Construction Delayed

Because 46 right-of-way invasion conflicts were reported, the four-lane widening of the road from Sanarate to the Ranch will be completed by 2020.

The extension of a 28-kilometre stretch of the Atlantic Route, which connects the country's capital with Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla, faces multiple difficulties, since 125 cases of invasion of the right-of-way have been registered, of which 46 became conflicts and 10 were described as "critical."

At present, only one conflict remains to be resolved. Prensalibre.com reviews that "... According to information from the General Direction of Roads (DGC), the problem is located between kilometer 58.2 and 58.4, in the village Agua Salóbrega, Sanarate, where the owners of a property on the banks of the road do not agree whether to negotiate it."

Jose Fernando Morales, Vice Minister of Communications, explained that "... the problems related to the right-of-way caused the work to be delayed so it was necessary to extend the execution period to the contractor, the company Overseas Engineering & Construction Co. (OECC), and after the project was offered for completion by October 2019, the new deadline was set for April 2020."

This work began at the end of 2015 and the global investment reaches $120 million, of which the Government of Taiwan donated $50 million and Guatemala provided the remaining $70 million.
