Guatemala: Preparations for Closure of Marlin Gold Mine

Goldcorp has announced that the process of closing the gold mine has already started and will be completed within four to five months.

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

The company that owns the mine in San Marcos started the vegetation recovery process in 2012, when it finished open air exploitations, and is now completing the process of recovery in the underground area, which it expects to finish this year.

Alfredo Galvez, manager of Goldcorp in the country, informed Prensalibre.com that "... in 2006, 160,934 troy ounces of gold were exported and 1,598,516.9 troy ounces of silver were exported. 2011 was the year that has the highest turnover, with 382,521.08 troy ounces of gold and 8,769,794.47 troy ounces of silver. "

"... Production at the mine exceeded expectations and in studies issued in 2003 calculated a potential to produce 200,000 ounces of gold in 10 years, and in 12 years to reach a cumulative production of 250 thousand ounces."

With the closure of production at the mine Goldcorp Marlin will be leaving the country as in January it sold its operation in the Cerro Blanco mine, Asuncion Mita, Jutiapa.
