Guatemala: Preparation for International Airport Opening

The start of operations of the international airport in the southeastern part of Guatemala is scheduled for March this year.

The Southern Air Base of Retalhuleu, could be starting operations in March. The airport has the capacity to receive international flights. "Funds for the work were provided by the private sector and the work took about a year."

Ricardo Alejos, chairman of the technical committee of the Guate Magic program said the airline terminal has "... a restaurant, restrooms, drainage and customer service offices."

"... The airport is expected to receive aircraft from Central America and Mexico, which will land on the 1,526 meter long runway," said Mercedes Rabanales of Guate Magic.

"A study which was carried out determined that the runway has capacity for landing aircraft carrying up to 60 passengers."
