Guatemala: Motorcycle Fleet Quadruples in Ten Years

Of the 904,000 units registered to date, the so-called "work bikes" with engines of between 125-200 cubic centimeters represent 60% of the total.

Friday, July 18, 2014

Between 2005 and 2014 the number of registered motorcycles increased by 439%, going from 167,643 to 904,747, according to figures from the Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT).

Of the total vehicle fleet in Guatemala, "... 34.3% are motorcycles, whereas in 2005 the proportion was 15.2%. Alongside the growth in the motorcycles, the proportion of cars in the total motor vehicle fleet has reduced from 30.9% to 23.2%. "

Roberto Alvarez, president of the Association of Importers of Motorcycles (Asim), and current manager of TVS, a brand of Indian motorcycles, noted in an article on Prensalibre.com that "... the growth was due to the ease of funding that banks started to offer and the entry of more brands competing in the market. 'About 90% of this market segment is sold with financing.' "

Amilcar Montejo, Head of the City Traffic Police, explained that "... the proliferation of motorcycles can be seen in activities such as personal transport, commercial transport, delivery of food, medicine, spare parts, messaging, billings, or services, such as motorcycle taxis."
