Guatemala: More New Businesses Created

The number of companies and sole traders registered in the Commercial Registry in January grew by 46% compared to the same month in 2014, a year in which a decrease of 3% was recorded.

Wednesday, February 11, 2015

In January 2015 2.289 companies were registered, 720 more than the 1,569 reported in the same month of 2014. Also last month 1,311 individual traders were registered, exceeding the 899 for the same period last year. Overall, considering both companies and individual traders, the increase compared to January 2014 was 46%.

Some of the factors which contributed to this rise included the fact that "... The Ministry of Economy pushed reforms in the registry to facilitate the registration of new companies. The changes included the implementation of carrying out procedures online in order to speed up the registration process which used to take 47 days, and now takes 14. For companies with capital of less than $39,000, the cost of registration was up to $390, but has now been reduced to $2."

Claudia del Águila, Deputy Minister of Investment and Competition, told Prensalibre.com that "... Prospects are good for the economy of 2015. The growth forecast for the economy in 2014 was 4.2%, and this year the same figure is maintained."
