Guatemala: Tender for Radio Spectrum

The government has announced that before the end of the year they expected to tender part of the frequency spectrum which is not currently being used.

Monday, April 25, 2016

The Morales administration plan use the 700 MHz spectrum that is currently available on broadcast television as a part of the AWS band, allocating it to telecom operators in order to improve data transmission services. reports that Acisclo Valladares, Presidential Commissioner for Competitiveness, explained that the next tender aims to comply with the objectives recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which establishes, among other things, that "... in 2020 the spectrum will need to range between 1340MHZ and 1960MHz for mobile services."

"... At the moment, the spectrum allocated to operators in Guatemala is 210MHz, representing 16.2% of the amount recommended by the ITU in 2015 and only 12.24% of the recommendation for 2020; It is the country with the lowest assigned spectrum, only surpassed by El Salvador. The average for the region is 24.58% for 2015 and 18.58% for 2020. "

"... The head of the legal department of Tigo, Manuel Sisniega, believes that the AWS band needs to be auctioned in order to expand possibilities for connectivity and data transmission, since otherwise growth in demand will soon saturate the frequencies currently in use."
