Carlos Colom Bickford, president of CNEE, the National Electric Energy Commission, reported they expect to invite bids in the first half of 2010, and award the contract by yearend.
“Bickford remarked that they intend to assure energy supply for 15 years starting on 2014, via new energy plants and efficient technologies, although bidding will be based on who offers a lower cost. On 2013 a number of energy contracts from the 1990s will expire”, reported Sigloxxi.com.
A tender for the provision of 800 MW of electricity for the next 15 years has attracted companies producing energy using wind power, hydro power, biomass, bunker fuel, coal and natural gas.
Among the companies interested in the bidding which will take place in January 2012 are, Cutuco Energy, Italy's Enel, los ingenios Pantaleón, La Unión and Magdalena, among others, said Carlos Colom Bickford, president of the National Energy Commission (CNEE).
Continuous attacks on the infrastructure of the country's power sector are jeopardizing investments.
The industry has had to deal with attacks on power transmission towers and continuing obstacles to the construction of power generation projects.
Joel Maldonado writes in Siglo21.com.gt , "The union is concerned about these facts, as the country goes through a decisive moment in the development of the sector, now that more investment is wanted in the form of 800 megawatts tenders, says Horacio Fernandez, CEO of the National Generators Association, stressing that he is concerned "that the criminals remain free and that the infrastructure is threatened '."
CNEE, the National Electric Energy Commission, will invite bids for supplying 800MW of energy in the second half of June.
Authorities will receive offers by the end of 2010, and plan to award the contract on March 2011.
Carlos Colom, president of the CNEE, told Prensalibre.com that “the purchase will include an option contract. If the prices are lower in the spot market than on the contract, they will be purchased there”.
This purchase is to cover electricity demand for the next 15 years, starting 2014.
It intends to address the needs of three energy distribution companies: “Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala, SA“ (EEGSA), “Distribuidora de Electricidad de Occidente, SA “ (Deocsa) and “Distribuidora de Electricidad de Oriente, SA “ (Deorsa).
