Guatemala: Insights of the Business Sector

Out of the almost 80,000 companies reported by the Banguat National Directory, 6 out of ten have between one and five employees, and only 2 out of ten have more than 99 people employed.

In the last update of the National Directory of Companies and their Premises (Dinel), registered by the Banco de Guatemala, 79,542 companies were reported, most of which are concentrated in the departments of Guatemala, Quetzaltenango and Sacatepéquez. reports that "... With a range of between six and nine persons hired, 11.5 per cent of the businesses are accounted for, from 10 to 19 there are 8,369 and with a range of 20 to 49 employees, 5,528. Businesses with staff between 50 and 99 total 1,853 and with more than 99 there are 2,93 reported."

"... According to Dinel 2013, out of 79,542 companies it was found that of the 17 economic activities, the one that concentrates the largest number of companies is wholesale and retail trade and vehicle repair with 27,440. The second category includes professional, scientific and technical activities with 10,398 companies; followed by real estate activities with 6,159. Other branches reported by the central bank survey are manufacturing industry, agriculture, transport and storage, mining, water supply and waste management, construction, accommodation and food service, financial activities, information and communications, and education."

Guatemala: Company Registration Up 15%

From January to April of this year, the number of mercantile companies registered totaled 13,975, 15% more than the number reported in the same period in 2018.

Data from the Mercantile Registry (RM) specify that between the first four months of 2018 and the same period of 2019, 1,783 more companies were registered in the country, going from 12,192 to 13,975.

90% of the companies that operate in Guatemala are micro business that have 1 to 5 employees, according to data from the National Business Directory.

7.8% (15,253) are small companies with 6 to 19 employees; 2% (3,897) are medium companies with between 20 to 99 employees; and 0.3%, some 604 companies, are large business with more than 100 employees.
