Guatemala: Increased Consumption Helps Economy

Economic activity in Guatemala in 2011 was driven by growing demand in certain sectors and a growth in remittances.

The recovery of the economy and an increase in remittances in 2011 supported a boom in household consumption. Statistics from the Tax Authority (SAT) reflect a positive change in the behavior of demand for some products, reports Elperiodico.com.gt.

Last year, the number of vehicles in circulation amounted to 158,147 units more than last year. Moreover, the amount of imported motorcycles in 2011 increased by 40 percent compared to the previous year.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages grew last year, there was a notable increase in beer which reached 156 million liters, which is 9.4 million liters more than the 146.6 million liters in 2010.

Soft drinks, syrups and concentrates were the most in demand with a total of 1.147 million liters. Juices and nectars totalled 245.8 million liters and 77.7 million liters of pure water were sold, according to figures from the SAT.

The production of alcoholic beverages increased in 2011 to 237,570,000 gallons, a growth of 6.1% compared to 2010.

The registration period covers January to November last year. In the same period in 2010, there were 223, 826,000 liters produced, reported Prensa.com.

Calvo Bases Itself in El Salvador

El Salvador Plans to Increase Production by 8%

MAG expects to increase the production of basic grains for the 2009-2010 harvest by 8%.

Felipe Luis Trigueros, director of Agricultural Economics of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), said that expectations are due to the 4% increase in area sown and because improved seeds, fertilizers and materials worth $30 million will be delivered to producers.
