Since 2003, the Incentives for Renewable Energy Projects Law offers fiscal and economic incentives.

The regulation gives fiscal incentives to companies working on renewable energy projects such as: solar, Aeolian, geothermal, hydro energy among others.

Oscar Chile Monroy writes about some of the incentives in his article at Prensalibre.com "... Taxes exemption on the Imports, tax exemption on the Value Added Tax (VAT) on the imported equipment to be used to produce energy, exemption on Sales Tax and on Solidarity Tax also, all them for a 10 years period.

A proposal has been made to extend the list of natural resources and technologies that enjoy benefits, eliminating the limit of 10 MW in order to encourge larger projects and providing incentives for the expansion of existing plants.

The National Assembly has amended article eight of Law 532, extending for five years the incentives for investments in this sector.

Sugar millers in Nicaragua have asked for tax benefits in a law future reform of law on their activities generating clean electricity.

Representatives of the Nicaraguan sugar mills San Antonio and Monterrosa proposed to members of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure of Parliament to include tax benefits for mills that produce energy that is used by the national electricity system.
