Guatemala: Growing Demand for Persian Limes

Persian lime production in Guatemala will increase by 20%, in order to meet the high demand for this product, mainly from the United States.

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

"High demand has led to improved planting techniques in order to increase production," said Judith Quevedo, president of the Association of Small Producers of the East.

Farmers will be starting the harvest season in July and will finish it in October, during which it is calculated that two containers of 21 U.S. tons each will be sent every week.

Data from the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport), reveals that every year about 700 tons, are sent from Guatemala generating revenues of $7 million.

Ricardo Santa Cruz, director of the agricultural sector at Agexport, explained that due to the fact that Persian Lime's have strong peels, they are able to be sent further afield. "Some growers are already sending Limes to Europe and there is increasing demand for the product in these countries," he added.
