Guatemala: GDP Up 3% in First Quarter

Transport, storage and communications, and private services, explained part of the 3% year-on-year increase reported in the Gross Domestic Product during the first three months of the year.

The growth of the Transportation, storage and communications activity, was mainly associated to the increase of the telecommunications activity, derived from the increase of broadband accesses and the greater number of mobile phone subscribers, congruent with the registered by the telephony companies, informed the Banco de Guatemala.

The document reviews that "... the aggregate value of private services was mainly influenced by the growth of real estate, business and rental activities, as a result of the increase in the intermediate demand of real estate services, advertising, legal and accounting activities, information technology, architecture and engineering, among others.

On the other hand, the activities of hotels and restaurants showed an increase, derived from the observed rise in household consumption of food services outside the home, a situation that has influenced the opening of new restaurants.

Regarding activities related to education, health and social services, these registered an increase in the demand for hospital services, doctors and dentists and for diverse services related to human health.

During 2018, the behavior of economic activities related to the external sector highlighted the Panama Canal, the Colon Free Zone and financial intermediation, reported the Office of the General Comptroller of the Republic.

During the third quarter of 2018, the constant Gross Domestic Product totaled $10.453 million, 3.6% more than that reported in the same period of 2017.

The activities related to the domestic economy this quarter were good: transport and communications, local wholesale and retail trade, financial intermediation, construction, real estate and business services, private education and health, and government services.

Panama: GDP Up 5% in 2017

Activities of the canal and air and financial services accounted for most of the 5.4% growth recorded in GDP over the past year.

The Comptroller General of the Republic reported that the increase reported in 2017 " ... is explained primarily by the behavior of economic activities related to the external sector. Among them, those of the Panama Canal, air and financial services stand out positively. On the other hand, trade in the Colon Free Zone, showed a decrease."
