Guatemala: Fixed Lines Growing Faster Than Cell Phone Lines

Between December 2015 and June 2016 the number of fixed telephone lines grew by 40%, while the number of mobile lines grew by only 3% in the same period.

Figures from the Superintendency of Telecommunications in Guatemala show that the number of fixed telephones lines went from 1,710,000 in December 2015 to 2,400,000 in June last year, while the total number of mobile lines increased from 18.1 million to 18.6 million.

The share of fixed telephony in the number of total lines in operation increased from 8.6% at the end of 2015 to 11.48% in the first half of last year. Mobile telephony accounted for 88.52%. 

In fixed telephony is the largest operator is Telecomunicaciones de Guatemala (Claro) with 1.98 million, followed by Comunicaciones Celulares (Tigo) with 200,189 and Telefonica Moviles with 128,978. GUATEL reported 1,401 lines.  Seven more operators, including Cablenet; A-Tel Communications, Universal Telecommunications and Vivophone Guatemala, together have about 99,000 lines.

In June 2012 the number of active lines was recorded at 19.8 million, 4.6% less than the 20.7 million recorded at end of 2011. reports that "After nearly two decades of steady expansion, in the first half of this year the cellular figures reported a negative, according to a report prepared by the Superintendency of Telecommunications (SIT)."

The increase in the number of mobile phone line users during the first half of 2011 was almost half a million.

As of 30 June, the total number of lines stood at 18,528,667, an increase of 5.7% compared to the same period in 2010, according to preliminary information from the Superintendency of Telecommunications (SIT).
