Guatemala: Exports Grow by 17% in January

Exports totaled $870.3 million in January 2013, increasing by 17% compared to the $744.2 million exported in the same period in 2012.

Sales of clothing were consolidated as the main export in Guatemala, generating revenues of $102.8 million, followed by sugar with $85 million, which is not more than the $96.8 million that came in January 2012.

Not all export products did well in January 2013. "Coffee saw the largest decline in product sales recorded in January. Grain exports reported a fall of 32.2% generating foreign exchange worth $47.5 million versus the $70.1 in January 2012," reported Elperiodico.com.gt.

Statistics from the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat), revealed that the main export destination for Guatemalan products, is the U.S., totaling $386.2 million, growing by 38.2% compared to the $279.4 million generated in the same period last year.

Exports to the Eurozone generated $46.2 million, an increase of 17% compared to the $39.5 million in January 2012, while shipments to Central America decreased by 5.3%, generating $198 million versus the $209.3 million sold in January 2012.

Honduran Agroexports Up 34%

In the first quarter of the year, agro-industrial exports grew by 34% compared to the same period in 2016, mainly due to a 25% increase in the volume of coffee exported.

Between January and March, exports from the agroindustrial sector totaled $741 million, of which $460 million corresponded to income generated by the export of coffee, which was favored by an increase in the international price of the grain.

Guatemala Exports $6.2 million in Ornamentals

In the month of January, the sector of ornamental plants, foliage and flowers generated $6.2 million in foreign exchange, which is an increase of 6.9% compared to the same period in 2012, when they totaled $5.8 million.

According to data from the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat), this segment makes up one of the top 25 export products, and is recovering after the economic crisis of 2009.

Salvadoran Trade Deficit Grows

Between January and August 2011, El Salvador has accumulated a trade deficit of $3,180.6 million, 47% more than in the same period in 2010.

For the period, exports totaled $3,666.7 million compared to a total of $6,847.3 million in imports, according to the Management of Economic Studies and Statistics at El Salvador’s Central Reserve Bank.
