Guatemala Elects Otto Perez Molina as President

As forecasted by exit polls, the former general won the second round of presidential elections in Guatemala.

Preliminary results released by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal showed that Perez Molina won 53.74% of the 4,281,693 votes cast, while Michael Baldizón, who has already conceded defeat, got 46.26%. Citizen participation was 61% of registered voters.

In his first speech after the confirmation of his victory, the next president of Guatemala announced that as president he will devote most of his time to addressing the serious public safety issues affecting the country.

Perez Molina has announced the names of some of his future cabinet members: Mauricio López Bonilla as Minister of the Interior, Alejandro Sinibaldi in the Communications department and Francisco Arredondo, in Health.

After scrutinizing 85% of the polls, Nicaragua’s Supreme Electoral Council announced that interim results indicated that the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSNL) and its candidate Daniel Ortega had garnered 62.56% of the total vote, while his closest follower, the Independent Liberal Party (PLI) and its candidate, liberal businessman Fabio Gadea, had only 30.87%.

Voting Intentions in Guatemala: Pérez Molina 44.8%

Four days before the presidential election, the rightwing candidate Otto Pérez Molina is still in the lead with more than 22 points over his closest competitor.

According to the poll conducted by the private company Vox Latina between 26 and 31 August, Otto Pérez Molina’s lead is followed by Manuel Baldizón , candidate for the Renewed Democratic Freedom Party (Leader), with 22.5% of people intending to vote for him and then Eduardo Suger , presidential candidate for the Commitment, Renewal and Order Party (Creo), with 18.4% of the vote.

In declaring himself the winner, Funes emphasized his commitment to respecting the rule of law and constitutional norms.

In a speech with a moderate tone, the winning candidate expressed his conviction to the strengthening of national reconciliation, referring to the peace agreement reached 20 years ago to end the civil war.
