Guatemala: Customs Controls for Airfreight

Changes are being made to control processes and clearance of cargo carryied by commercial aircraft at the La Aurora international airport.

From a statement issued by the Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT):

Air cargo arriving at La Aurora International Airport and which is shipped aboard scheduled commercial passenger flights, now has better customs controls applied by the staff at the loading and unloading area of the Air Express customs office of the Administration Superintendency Tax.

This improvement in the method of cargo control arose from the subscription of the document "Provisions for coordination between the Airport Authority of La Aurora International Airport and the Customs Department", to help to lower the risks of smuggling and customs and fraud offenses .

Electronic Tax Stamps about to Operate

Two companies are expected to complete certification this month to provide the electronic tax stamps service in Guatemala, and by January 2019 they would be operating throughout the entire customs system.

In July of this year, it was announced that the tender for the service of electronic tax stamps for containers in Guatemalan customs would no longer be carried out, allowing several companies to provide their services independently.

Authorities have threatened to close the customs office at the port terminal if there is no improvement in the facilities and operation of the port within six months.

Problems over control of container inventories, lack of controls for entry of merchandise and the inadequate condition of infrastructure at the terminal are affecting customs operations, according to the head of the Customs Intendance. Among the requests made to the company Empresa Portuaria Nacional Santo Tomás de Castilla (Empornac) are the implementation of a closed circuit television system and greater controls at exit and entry modules.

Guatemala: Customs Controls on Private Flights

On December 8 inspections and customs controls began on people and goods arriving aboard international private flights at La Aurora International Airport.

Preparations for the protocol establishing customs controls by the Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT) started in August, following an agreement signed between the SAT and and the ministries of Communications, Agriculture and Interior.
