Guatemala: Cruise Tourism Up 16%

Improvements in promoting marine tourism could be the cause of the increase in the number of tourists arriving on cruise ships in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2014.

According to tourism entrepreneurs, the promotional strategy that has been implemented to increase cruise ship arrivals to the country is paying off, and explains the observed increase in tourist arrivals by air.

After the sea route, the route registering the largest increase was by air, with 5%, followed by land routes, with a variation of 2%, according to the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT).

Dca.gob.gt reports that "... According to figures from the INGUAT, the type of visitor for June corresponds to 67 percent tourists and 33 percent and day trippers. Likewise, within countries that have higher market shares in the arrivals of non-resident visitors are: El Salvador with 39 percent, the US with 21, Honduras with 8, Mexico with 6, while Costa Rica, the United Kingdom and Colombia accounted for 2 percent each. "

In total 1 million 71 thousand 794 foreigners arrived in the country, which contributed to the economy $772.6 million (Q5 thousand 964 million), representing an increase of 3.5 percent compared with the same period in 2014. "
