Guatemala Commits to Increase Cocoa Production

With technical assistance and new plantings, the country expects a 25% increase in cocoa production.

Currently there are about 3,700 metric tons planted and are harvested by about 3.000 producers.

Sigloxxi.com reports, “Rolando Say, a specialist for the Tropical Agriculture Research and Education (CATIE), said at a forum that "...with the increase in the number of crops it is expected to improve product quality and reach other market niches.”

The number of producers grew by 40% in the past two years, with a total harvest of about 850 tons.

Cocoa producers plan to have 8000 hectares dedicated to growing the grain within three years which would position the Honduras at the forefront of Central American growers.

The Return of Nicaraguan Cotton Cultivation

A pilot project of 1,600 hectares of cotton cultivation has been highly successful, and this year up to 5,000 hectares could be sown.

The Nicaraguan Cotton Reactivation pilot project was planning on planting 2,800 hectares. However, the 16 producers who enrolled in the venture only cultivated 1,600 hectares. Nevertheless the experiment was considered "a complete success" states an article on Laprensa.com.ni.

Guatemala Wants to Resume Cacao Production

Cacao harvest and production in Guatemala has dropped 75% in the past 10 years.

Cacao production was 4.000 tons in 1999, but has dropped to 1.000 since then, stated Roberto Deleón, president of the National Cacao Association (Anakakaw).
