Guatemala: Agricultural Sector is Not Competitive

The union Camagro claims that in the last six months adverse investment and employment conditions have become more pronounced.

The members of the Chamber dedicated to agricultural, agro-industrial and agri-export activities in the 22 departments of the country, expressed through a press release, that they believe that the country's
competitiveness is still not being unattended to, and that during these six months the Government has caused adverse investment and employment conditions to be more pronounced. The three most criticised ministries being: the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of the Interior, for the main reasons which are summarized as follows:

MICIVI without controls and without results.

MAGA: there is an urgent need to move from dialogue to action.

MINGOB does not protect life nor property.

Guatemala: How to Reactivate Agroexports

The high logistic costs and the appreciation of the Quetzal against the dollar are two of the factors which, according to exporters, have prevented better performance from being achieved in recent years.

According to Agexport, exports of Guatemalan agricultural products in the last 6 years have registered very low growth, going from $2.96 billion in 2011 to $3.2 billion in 2016. In the same period, non-traditional agricultural products which registered a decrease were peeled sesame seeds (-14%), frozen peas (-6%), broccoli (-47%), frozen beans (-35%), tomatoes (-35% %), potatos (-48%), and mangos (-3%), among others.

Agricultural exports totaled $4.7 billion in 2016, equivalent to 45% of the total amount exported by the country, and grew by 7% compared to 2015.

The most recent Agricultural Statistical Bulletin (№ 27), by  the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, provides detailed information on the main indicators, area and production, prices, foreign trade, credit granted to the sector, wages, public expenditure and employment.

Guatemala's Agro Exports

A strategy focused on improving productive infrastructure, irrigation, roads, logistics and greater mechanization aims to increase exports by 40% by 2024.

From a statement issued by the Association of Exporters of Guatemala:

31 years ago, Guatemala exported coffee, bananas, cardamom and cotton for a total of US $507, then in 2015 it was recorded that the exportable supply has diversified into cardamom, sesame seeds, vegetables, flowers, crustaceans and shellfish, among other things, and is worth about US $3 billion, 104 million. Involved in this nationwide impact are, according to the National Survey of Living Conditions 2015 (ENCOVI, about 31% of workers, given that they engage in related agricultural activities, while in rural areas the percentage is 55%.

Guatemalan Agro-Industry Unveils 2021 Plan

February 2011

The Livestock and Agricultural Industry chamber unveiled a plan based on productivity, diversification, quality, environmental sustainability and food safety.

Otto Kuhsiek, president of CAMAGRO, noted that over 1.6 million jobs depend on agriculture, of which 81% are located in rural areas, half of them in family companies and the rest in large-scale, high productivity companies.
