Guatemala: $70 million for School Infrastructure

The Morales administration has announced that it plans to carry out maintenance and restoration work in 4,000 educational establishments located in different areas of the country.

Authorities at the Ministry of Education stated that the maintenance works on buildings in the educational network will be financed with national funds and with a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

According to details provided by representatives of the executive, of the $70 million that will be invested, $23 million comes from the Government of Guatemala and another $47 million correspond to part of an IDB loan approved by the Congress of the Republic in April.

Regarding the disbursement of resources, Óscar Hugo López, Minister of Education explained to Prensalibre.com that " ... the removal of some 2,000 educational establishments is contemplated with Q171 million ($23 million) of national funds, and next week that money will start to be delivered to the Parent Organizations (OPF), which will be in charge of buying materials and executing the work."

In relation to the IDB loan funds, Lopez explained that " ...In September the loan funds could be available, and in October and November the disbursement made to the OPFs to work on the removal."

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) loan, is part of a loan package of $850 million, which will be disbursed in installments.

"These resources, which are exclusively for matters relating to road infrastructure, will be used for a second tranche of cantonal road development in a number of towns and roads that have already been established, the projects will be monitored by a unit of the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation", published Prensalibre.cr.
