Guatemala: $15 million to Remodel La Aurora

It has been announced that in the coming days the request for proposals document will be published for the refurbishment of Guatemala City airport, with an investment of $15 million.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation announced that the remodeling consists in  "... the remodeling of La Aurora International Airport, which includes the resurfacing of the runway and quick exits, changing the floors in the facilities, leasing equipment for inspections, and painting signals on the tracks."

Carlos Velasquez Monge, Director General of Civil Aviation, told Elperiodico.com.gt that   "... The funds will come from the budget of the DGAC, according to Velasquez, which will be distributed as follows: ($11 million) Q82 million 230 thousand for laying asphalt on the current runway and fast exits of the terminal; ($2.4 million) Q18 million 900 thousand for the purchase and installation of porcelain floors; ($1.7 million) Q13 million 125 thousand for leasing equipment for nonintrusive inspection of people and luggage; ($650 000) 251 000 Q5 million for painting signs for airports and airfields in the country."

"... The director also said that they have a budget ceiling of Q6 million for the refurbishment of 52 bathrooms, which will be designed by the faculties of architecture from different universities, which will be submitted to a contest which will be convened by the DGAC."

In two weeks, the expansion project—which entails 420 additional meters of runway at the international airport—will be ready.

With an investment of $300,000, the runway expansion will allow for three new airplanes.

The regional director of the Authority of Civil Aeronautics (AAC), Inés de Esquivel, informed La Estrella: “...in the last five years, $1.5 million dollars in investments have been made for the improvement of various areas at the Enrique Malek airport."

One thousand meters of runway that are in poor condition will be rebuilt according to the Director General of Civil Aviation.

Work will be done between 11 pm and 4 am, so that traffic will not be disrupted.

Marcela Fernández wrote in Prensalibre.com: "The cost of remodeling and who will do the job are not known right now."
